Walters State Community College Shelton Adds Mike Corn to Baseball Coaching Staff

On Thursday, Walters State baseball coach Dave Shelton announced the addition of Mike Corn to his coaching staff.

He will be the Senators Recruiting Coordinator and Infield Coach.

Corn comes to Walters State from Columbia State Community College where he had been the head coach for the past 13 years.

"I couldn't be more excited about the addition of Coach Corn to our staff here at Walters State," Shelton said. "Our program and our players are so fortunate to have him join us. The wealth of baseball knowledge that he possesses will provide a tremendous learning opportunity for everyone in our program, myself included. I truly feel like Coach Corn is one of the best coaches in the country, at any level, and we are blessed to have him as a Senator."

During his 13 years at Columbia State (2009-2022), Corn led the Chargers to two Region VII Championships and a NJCAA World Series appearance in 2014. The Chargers finished in sixth place at the World Series.

Corn was named TCCAA Coach of the Year four times and had over 60 players sign to Division I programs. He's had 17 players play professionally.

Before his time at Columbia State, Corn was the Director of Baseball Operations for one year at the University of Tennessee.

He started his coaching career at Tusculum in 1999 where he was the assistant baseball coach, the head junior varsity coach and the assistant director of admissions. His nine-year tenure at Tusculum saw the program post eight consecutive winning seasons, four straight 40-win campaigns, three South Atlantic Conference championships, two SAC Tournament titles and four trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. In all, the Pioneers posted a 301-156-1 run during Corn's time on staff.

After a decorated prep career, during which he led Unicoi County High School to back-to-back TSSAA Class-AA state championships (1991-92), Corn began his collegiate playing career at Columbia (Tenn.) State Community College in 1994. He later transferred to Northeast State Community College in Bluff City, S.C., where he earned his Associate's Degree in 1996.

He completed his collegiate eligibility as an infielder at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. During his playing career at Coker, the Cobras were a 1997 Team America Selection, and the squad also captured the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference crown in 1998. After batting .302 as a junior at Coker in 1997, Corn hit .375 in 1998.

He received his Bachelor's degree in Fitness Programming from Coker in 1998.
