Hamblen County Sheriff's Office Letters of Commendation

Two Officers with the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office and a nurse at the Hamblen County Jail recently received Letters of Commendation due to their efforts in saving the life of a female inmate housed within the Hamblen County Jail.

On the morning of Saturday, September 10, 2022, there was an overdose incident in the female section of the jail in which an inmate was found unresponsive and without a pulse due to ingesting contraband which had been smuggled into the female lockup. Jail staff took immediate and swift action and after administering Narcan, they performed lifesaving CPR. The inmate was then rushed to the hospital and released the same day. According to Chief Deputy Bob Ellis, had they not performed CPR, the Narcan would have most likely been useless.

The correctional officers responsible for saving the inmate’s life were Officer Angela Hodge and Officer Cassie Bell, along with Nurse Brandy Klein.

Mayor Bill Brittain was on hand for the presentation of the letters and stated, “Their dedication to their job and the people they oversee is exemplary.”

Hamblen County Sheriff Chad Mullins reiterated the mayor’s statement and added, “I’ve watched the video footage of the incident and I’m proud of how quickly and proficiently they handled what could have been a disastrous situation. Not only did their training pay-off, but their natural instincts to save someone’s life also kicked-in.”

Although illegal contraband introduced into the jail is not a new issue, Sheriff Mullins said under his administration, it is one of the issues at the top of his list to be corrected and those caught introducing contraband into the jail will be charged to the fullest extent of the law. At present, jail staff is in training on a body scanner recently purchased by the county. Its purpose is to deter the introduction of illegal items into the jail.
